What is Depression and Anxiety? Why does it Happen?

Some people have heard about Depression, Anxiety and mental illness for the first time after the death of “Sushant Singh”. An Indian actor who allegedly committed suicide due to depression and anxiety. Before that, our society considered mental illness a hoax or an illusion or a delusion of hopeless, hysterical, half-witted humans of 21st century. These half-witted hypochondriacs finally gain the acknowledgement of society after the death of Sushant Singh. Or at least gained just a temporary reaction towards this unattended problem; that took only few known and thousands unknown deaths.

Lets first try to understand what depression and anxiety are? Depression, Anxiety and mental illness are genuine medical problems. Just like headache, fever and any other disease; mental illness is also a disease which needs proper treatment. Lets zoom in to the nitty-gritty details of depression and anxiety.

Depression is a mental illness that negatively affect your mood. You will feel sad and gloomy and dejected for no apparent reason. Or the reason in known, but the sadness is more severe than the reason entails. It gets darker and colder and murkier with time. And a time comes when a completely healthy person goes from happy to sad to sadder to depressed. Andrew Solomon gave a savvy description of depression.

As we discussed, depression is a medical illness, a disease, a disorder that need proper treatment. Furthermore, depression also has symptoms just like any other disease. Lest explore some of those symptoms

  • Constant fatigue and low energy.
  • Difficulty in remembering and recalling.
  • Difficulty in concentrating.
  • Headache, body pain and cramps without any apparent reason.
  • Difficulty in sleeping.
  • Decreased appetite.

If your friend or family is showing any of these symptoms, you need to be wary of his/her situation.

Anxiety:

Depression and anxiety are the member of the same family; mental illness. Anxiety is like a stress, a feeling of fear or apprehension about the future. There is a difference between normal anxiety and severe anxiety. Feeling stressed before a job interview, experiencing stomachache before the exam or feeling fear before any big event are the example of normal emotional fluctuation. However, when this anxiety becomes severe, problems starts. On the other hand, Chronic anxiety is having emotional turbulence and experiencing severe fear or stress without any obvious reason.

Lets enumerate the symptoms of anxiety

  • Irregular and fast breathing.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Difficulty in sleeping.
  • Restlessness.
  • Difficulty in concentration.

As we can see, the symptoms of depression overlap with the symptoms of anxiety. More than 40% of the people who are suffering from depression are also suffering from anxiety. They mostly come in couples.

Now we know what is mental illness and how can it affect the people. Moreover, we also familiarized ourselves with some of the symptoms of both mental problems. So next time if someone is suffering from anxiety or depression, don’t ignore it. Don’t advice them to just offer prayers to get better. Make effort, take them to the doctor or a psychiatrist and treat them properly.

No one tells you to just offer prayer or recite Holy Quran when you are suffering from fever. They take you to the hospital. So when you are having problem with the rest of your body, it is okay to go to doctor and have a proper treatment. But, when you are having problems in your brain, the only solution is religious activities? We are not against the prayers or any religious activity, but these problems need proper medication and proper treatment.
